The Ostriches by Jennifer Ussi

I’m excited to be part of the virtual book tour celebrating The Incredible Adventures of Casper the Cat Who Got Lost in Africa, Book 6: The Ostriches by Jennifer Ussi, illustrated by Lekshmi Bose.

In this newest book in the series, Casper’s journey across Africa leads her into the Savannah, where she meets a group of ostriches who would rather ignore danger than face it. Think, ostriches putting their head in the sand!? As threats get closer, Casper must help them understand that bravery isn’t about being the biggest or fastest, but about choosing to see what’s really happening and taking responsibility.

One of the things I enjoyed most about this story is how naturally it blends humour with meaningful life lessons. The ostriches bring plenty of funny moments (especially with the added illustrations), but underneath the laughter is a thoughtful message about avoidance, honesty, and courage. These are big ideas for young readers, yet the story presents them in a way that feels realistic and doable, rather than heavy.

Casper continues to be a wonderful main character. Her kindness and quiet leadership show children that you don’t need to be loud or strong to make a difference. I especially appreciated how the story encourages problem-solving and speaking up when something isn’t right, which makes it a great conversation starter for both classrooms and families.

Overall, this is a warm, engaging adventure with heart and purpose. It’s a great choice for readers- and an awesome introduction to chapter books. I would say it is a great fit for ages 6–8, especially children who enjoy animal stories, gentle humour, and meaningful messages woven into the action.
