Ripples by Katie Yamasaki

A young girl and her aunty set out on a peaceful river journey, taking in the beauty of the world around them. Along the way, they witness simple but meaningful acts of care- people helping one another, sharing, and celebrating life together. As more people join them, these small moments grow into a collective effort to care for their environment, showing how kindness can ripple outward.
This book really reminded me of how one action or word, no matter how big or small, can make a difference.
It is such a gentle, thoughtful picture book that highlights the power of small actions and shared responsibility. The story flows quietly, just like the river itself, giving readers space to notice the details- both in the words and in the illustrations.
One of the most impactful elements of this book is how it models community care. Rather than focusing on one big heroic act, it shows how everyday kindness- like helping a neighbour, sharing food, working together- can build into something meaningful. This makes it especially powerful for young readers, who can clearly see how their own actions matter.
My students are always looking for ways THEY can make a difference, as sometimes the problems of the world just seem too big. This book reminds them that they CAN- and gives hope for a better future.
The illustrations are rich and expressive, filled with movement (just like the river!) and emotion. Each page invites readers to pause and look closely, making it a wonderful choice for read-alouds and discussions.
This book would be an excellent addition to classrooms and libraries, especially for conversations around:
community and belonging
environmental stewardship
empathy and kindness
