"Alycat and the Sunday Scaries"

By Alysson Foti Bourque and illustrated by Chiara Civati

  • Friends helping others overcome their fears

  • Friends encouraging one another

  • Working together/teamwork

The story begins with Alycat expressing her worries to her mom- which all have to do with tomorrow, Monday, and the things that could go wrong. Her mom tells her to enjoy today, and Alycat goes outside to spend time with her friends. Throughout the day, all the cat friends encounter different challenges and worries, but they work together to overcome them. In the afternoon, while eating treats at Alycat’s house, they chat about all the GOOD that will happen in the upcoming week. They help Alycat look forward to all the fun they will have. “No more Sunday scaries!”

I’m really excited to read more from this series! As a teacher, these are the perfect read-alouds for teaching a specific concept to young children- a simple, easy-to-understand message that is told in an entertaining & engaging way. Read-alouds like this provide such a great opportunity for conversations, role-playing social situations, and sharing feelings.
